Michael C. May
Michael C. May, founding and managing partner of May Law, is an aggressive litigator who has represented clients in courts throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia in civil and criminal matters. He has experience in all manner of litigation, having represented both businesses and individuals as plaintiffs and defendants. He has been honored by Virginia Business Magazine’s “Legal Elite” from 2012 to the present and was named one of Northern Virginia Magazine’s “Top Lawyers” for 2021.
Mr. May is equally comfortable in the practice of business litigation, employment law, domestic relations/family law, and criminal law. He is licensed to practice in all courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia; he is also a proud member of the Virginia and Prince William Bar Associations. Mr. May is fluent in Spanish and has assisted the Firm in numerous litigation matters where such fluency has been required.
In addition to his work as an attorney, Mr. May spent nine years (2007-2016) serving his home community as an elected member of the Board of County Supervisors in Prince William County, Virginia. In both 2010 and 2014, he was selected by his fellow supervisors as Vice Chairman of the county-wide board. While on the Board of County Supervisors, Mr. May helped oversee the budget for Virginia’s second largest county of almost 450,000 residents. Mr. May was honored to receive the Human Rights Award from the PWC Human Rights Commission in 2012.
Not only is Mr. May a courtroom litigator, but he also handles numerous transactional matters, including advising businesses on corporate and employment best practices as well as government contracts and procurement issues. He has represented companies in bid protests adverse to the government and in negotiating employment contracts, leases, intellectual property matters, and purchase and sale agreements.
Mr. May’s interest in law and politics was sparked as a West Springfield High School volunteer on the campaign of Honorable David B. Albo (41st District House of Delegates), who would become a political and legal mentor. He went on to double-major in Spanish and Government at The College of William & Mary (1998). Mr. May became Legislative Aide to Hon. Albo, running campaigns for him and other Northern Virginia elected officials. He attended George Mason School of Law and Economics at night while working on Capitol Hill for his Congressman, Rep. Tom Davis (VA-11), and was awarded the Bryce Harlow Foundation Scholarship in his final year of law school (2004); he later served as a Moot Court judge. Mr. May was the first staffer to field a Prince William congressional district office in Woodbridge, where he later moved, married, and raised three kids.
Mr. May dedicated countless hours to public service as a member of the Lake Ridge Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce, and appointed representative to his county’s Social Services Board. He served on the Prince William Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors (Vice-Chairman, Program and Ex-Officio Director) and as At-Large Planning Commissioner in Prince William County, advising the Board of Supervisors on land use planning and zoning law. He also spent seven years as Chairman of the Potomac Rappahannock Transportation Commission.
In recognition of his political experience, Mr. May has been a featured speaker at the IRI’s Civil Governance Trainings in both Mexico and Nicaragua, where he shared his knowledge on campaign approach, messaging, and community political activism.
During his tenure in public service, Mr. May has been regarded as a tireless advocate for his constituents, and he brings this same passion to representing his clients, no matter how big or small their case.
