In what ways are Family Law cases unique in the Arlington courts?

Family law cases in the Arlington courts possess unique characteristics and challenges that differentiate them from other legal matters.

Understanding the Arlington Family Court System

  • Specialized Judges and Court Procedures: Arlington’s family court has judges who specialize in family law. This expertise ensures informed, empathetic decisions on sensitive matters.
  • Local Rules and Regulations: Arlington courts have specific local rules that may differ from other jurisdictions in Virginia, impacting case proceedings.

Unique Challenges in Family Law Cases

  • Highly Personal Matters: Family law cases, including divorces, involve deeply personal issues. The emotional nature of these cases requires a unique approach.
  • Complex Financial Considerations: Arlington’s proximity to Washington D.C. often means dealing with complex financial situations, including government pensions and international assets.

Like all Virginia courts, Arlington follows Virginia law and procedure.Like all Virginia courts, Arlington follows Virginia law and procedure.

Our Circuit Court is modern and professional.  Our judges are William T. Newman, Jr., Daniel S. Fiore, II, and Louise DiMatteo.  Prior to joining the bench, Judge Newman had a general litigation practice.  He is now our most senior judge.  Judge DiMatteo had extensive criminal defense experience as a Public Defender before gaining extensive civil litigation experience as a County Attorney prior to joining the bench in 2012.  Judge Fiore was a leading commercial litigator prior to joining the bench in 2012. We have tried cased before each of them.  Our Juvenile and Domestic Relations judges are George D. Varoutsos and Robin L. Robb. Judge Varoutsos had a prior criminal defense practice; Judge Robb had extensive experience as a Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) for children in custody cases.

Even though Arlington is a major urban county, within eyeshot of Washington, D.C., the courthouse is run like a small town in many ways.  Sometimes it can be easier to get matters before a judge for a decision than in a more populous county like Fairfax.  Also, with fewer Judges, it is sometimes easier to anticipate outcomes.
